United Way wants kids off the floor

Community Connections and Volunteer Center is looking for beds for kids who won't have one this Christmas.

The Fort Dodge Community Foundation and United Way program is working to help families through its "Bridging the Gap" initiative, Jessica Martens, Volunteer Center coordinator, said.

"Our goal is to get children off the floor," she said. "There are countless numbers of children sleeping on the floor here in Fort Dodge every night, and that is really sad. And at the same time, there's lots of people who have extra beds in their spare bedroom, attic, basement that aren't being used. What we want to do is find a way to get the beds from the people who no longer need them to these children, and get them off the floor."

"Bridging the Gap" began early this year and kicked off in October. A used furniture donation drive was held in November at Fort Dodge Ford, with a focus on beds for kids, Martens said.

"We successfully got about eight UPS trucks full of donations," she said. "These donations range from beds to dressers, couches. Everything."
