Gift of beds fills a need at homeless shelter

A timely donation from a surprising source will provide four new beds at Safe Haven Emergency Shelter this winter. Appropriately, the beds were installed at the Sault Ste. Marie location during National Homelessness Awareness Week in November.
Bruce W. Beaudoin, resource manager at Safe Haven, said a chain reaction that began with the EUP Intermediate School District eventually led to construction of two sets of bunk beds by inmates at the Kinross Correctional Facility.
“We try to find service learning projects for our students whenever we can,” explained Jill Besteman, school principal at Chippewa Correctional Facility. When the project first started, Besteman was principal of the KCF school where building trades instructor Andy Thompson worked with students to construct the beds.
The EUPISD provided a list of organizations seeking assistance.
“With our clientele, there are many charities and functions that we cannot participate in,” the principal explained. “It has to be something they can build and export.”
