Crisis Ministry housing more homeless thanks to sprinkler system

Jon David Everhart, Lexington's fire marshal, said Crisis Ministry received a certificate of occupancy last month to go back to its old numbers of housing people in its men's and women's dorms.

Within a week of the Lexington Fire Department issuing a certificate of occupancy for the shelters, the men's and women's dorms were at capacity, said Crisis Ministry Executive Director Gayle Whitehead.

"We took our sign down and word got around that we could start taking people," Whitehead said, referring to a sign that stated Crisis Ministry was not taking new residents.

Inspectors with the Lexington Fire Department told officials with Crisis Ministry in May that the nonprofit was over capacity. An inspection by the Lexington Fire Department determined that Crisis Ministry without a sprinkler system could house 31 in the men's dorm, 10 in the women's dorm and a limit of 25 people in the Genesis House for families. Whitehead said her nonprofit had been housing 52 men and 18 women in the men's and women's shelter, respectively, and 40 people in the Genesis House.
